5th IFFK
Mayonnaise gets
Suvarna Chakoram
The Korean film Mayonnaise directed by Mr. Yoon-In Ho
won Suvarna Chakoram, the award for the best feature
film of the IFFK 2000 for its psycological depth and
powerful analysis of love-and-hate relationship arising
out of the generational conflicts in family life.
On the closing ceremony of the 5th IFFK held here, Mr.
Marco Muller, the Jury Chairperson of the film festival
announced the award. The award carries a cash price
of Indian Rupees 1 Million (US$ 23,000 approx.) and
an acrylic statuette.
Special
Jury prizes were given to the Indian film, Karunam,
directed by Mr. Jayaraj, for its simplicity and truthfulness
in the subtle evocation of love as the ultimate act
of our existence, the Brazilian film Through the Window,
directed by Tata Amaral, for its strong character study,
which opens for us a window on the multi-faceted realities
of contemporary urban life in the southern hemisphere,
and the Bhutanese film, The Cup, directed by Khywnste
Norbu, for its freshness of touch and vivid representation
of a sprirtual (and very human) world which cinema had
left so far unexplored
The
Cup, Norbu's directorial debut, depicts the Tibetan
refugee problem through the experiences of young monks
and their teachers. The film had won grand Jury prize
at the Noosa festival and the FIPRESCI award at the
Pusan festival.
Mr.
Derek Malcolm, Chairman of the FIPRESCI Jury announced
their awards for Bye Bye Africa, directed by Mahamat
Saleh and Deveeri, an Indian film directed by Kavitha
Lankesh. Both are the debut ventures of the directors.
IFFK 2000 has two sections, Competition and Out of Competition.
