INTERNATIONAL
JURY
ISTVAN
GAAL (Jury Chairman)
Hungarian
filmmaker István Gaál was one of the key
directors in Hungarian New Wave cinema. He graduated
in 1959 from the Budapest's Academy of Dramatic and
Cinematographic Arts and after receiving an Italian
State scholarship for his film Palyamunkasok/Surfacemen,
Gaál studied at the Centro Sperimentale, Rome.
He continued making short films while in Rome under
the supervision of different directors. Gaál
made his feature-film debut in 1964 with the critically
acclaimed Sodrásban/Current. He has since become
known for sharp insight into the state of Hungarian
society and for his sensitive portrayals of peasant
life.

Art History,Theatre and Mass Communication. Until 1962
he worked as a writer and journalist. In 1967 he joined
the H.F.F. as Assistant professor. In 1990 he was appointed
the Vice-president H.F.F. He is the founder and director
of the Munich International Festival of Film Schools

MOHSEN
MAKHMALBAF
Mohsen
Makhmalbaf is the maverick of contemporary Iranian cinema.
Born in Tehran in 1957, left school at the age of fifteen
to form a group of religious activists in opposition
to the regime then in effect. He started working in
radio and as a writer. In 1982, he made his first film,
‘Nassouh’s Response’. Makhmalbaf,
known internationally for The Peddler, The Cyclist,
Gabbeh and Once Upon a Time has directed 18 films. A
devout Muslim, in his early realist work he displayed
his concern with the poor and dispossessed. His more
recent work, however, has moved towards a more poetic
style and more self-reflexive forms of film-making.
He was awarded the medal of L'Officier de L'Ordre des
Arts et des Lettres by the French government last year.
VIJAYA
MEHTA
Started
as an actress at the age of 17 on the Marathi Stage
and worked for 11 years in drama, Vijaya Mehta made
the transition into cinema with ‘Pestonjee’
in 1987. Her entry into cinema was an accident, she
entered into a small role in Shyam Benegal’s 'Kalyug'
to watch his mode of direction. The experience with
Benegal gave her enough confidence to go on with 'Smrithi
Chitre' a project offered to her by Doordarshan. A short
story by B.K. Karanjia extended into a full length feature
film,''Pestonjee'' has become a matter for debate, discussion,
criticism and appreciation. It is counted among the
Indian films of ''exceptional class''
WILLIAM
GREAVES
William
Greaves has produced more than 200 documentary films
that have earned more than 70 international film festival
awards, an Emmy, and four Emmy nominations. He has been
inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame; and
was the recipient of a special "homage" at
the first Black American Independent Film Festival in
Paris; and is also the recipient of the Special Life
Achievement Award of the Association of Independent
Video and Filmmakers, a nationwide organization. Greaves
began his career as a professional actor, and was featured
in the Broadway hit, "Lost in the Stars,"
starring Todd Duncan. The production was written by
Maxwell Anderson (based on the book, "Cry, the
Beloved Country") with music by Kurt Weill, and
directed by Rouben Mamoulian. He played a feature role
in the groundbreaking hit movie "Lost Boundaries,"
which starred Mel Ferrer and Canada Lee. He is a long-time
member of the Actors Studio, and recipient of its Duse
Award, along with Marlon Brando, Robert DeNiro, Jane
Fonda, Shelley Winters, Al Pacino Ellen Burstyn, Paul
